Head Start Programs
For five years I was a Head Start Director in a community action agency. It was a medium sized program spanning three counties. I managed a $3.5 million dollar program and supervise 120+ staff persons at 12 different locations.
Despite being new to Head Start when I started, like many people in the Head Start community, I fell in love with the program. It is now in my blood.
I think what I love most about Head Start, besides the people, is the ultimate potential that exists. That potential is the power of parents, staff and the community working together for low income children and families.
I believe whole heartedly in the ability of Head Start Programs across this nation. Every day programs are reaching their goals of improved school readiness for preschool aged children and the greater self sufficiency of their families. I am blessed to have been a Head Start Director for those five years.
During that time, in addition to providing a variety of leadership and administrative skills to my Head Start Program, I also relished in those times when I was able to be a motivating and inspiring speaker to my team. Two of my quality improvement themes – The Power of C.A.R.E.™ and What Color Is Your Imagination™ were created as speeches to motivate the staff during all staff meetings.
As these themes and my desire to get back into a classroom myself grew, I realized that I needed to expand my reach. I believe I can bring so much to other Head Start Programs....to your Head Start Program. And that is why I started Owens Burton Consulting.
I have found in these past years that I am most energized and effective when I am involved in Parent Education, Staff Development, Strategic Planning and Motivational Speaking to bring a team to a consensus on its goals and objectives. I'd like to bring my energy and devotion to continuous improvement to your Head Start Program.
Being a former Head Start Director myself, I believe I am uniquely qualified to assist you, as I am so intimately aware of your needs and the national Head Start initiatives. I continue to be involved with Head Start, in fact I have a long term contract with the Maryland Head Start Association to act as their part-time Executive Director.
During my past presentations at Head Start programs, many attendees have expressed a joy in having a presenter who truly knows Head Start and can speak from that unique perspective.
